Looking Within

For my 200th article I wanted to dive into what ‘looking within’ really means. It is often used as a term, but then rarely expanded upon.


All that you seek is already within you. In Hinduism it is called the Atman, in Buddhism the pure Buddha-Mind. Quakers call it the ‘still small voice within.’ This is the space of full awareness that is in harmony with all the Universe, and thus is wisdom itself.


Remember, Buddha was not a Buddhist, Jesus was not a Christian, Muhammad was not a Muslim. They were teachers who taught love. Love was their religion. Let’s find the teacher in your Self.


According to Anthony De Mello, priest, psychotherapist, spiritual teacher, and writer, (in his book 'Awareness') looking within means “All is well, awareness, waking up, and finding your Self.”


In Luke 17:20–21, Jesus (no introduction needed) said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within YOU”.

 

Carl Jung said “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside awakes.”


Ramana Maharshi wrote "The Self cannot be found in books. You have to find it for yourself in yourself."


William Shakespeare wrote "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man."


Rumi said "You have no need to travel anywhere. Journey within your Self, enter a mine of rubies and bathe in the splendour of your own light."


Mooji, the spiritual teacher, said "Step into the fire of self-discovery. This fire will not burn you, it will only burn what you are not."


St Augustine, philosopher, theologian, and author said "Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering."


Rumi, scholar, poet, and theologian wrote "I looked in temples churches and mosques. But I found the divine within my heart."

Looking within means identifying with, and choosing to be, your Higher Self instead of your ego (wounded child): And it is a daily choice


Speak in such a way that others love to listen to you: Listen in such a way that others love to speak to you.


George Bernard Shaw wrote that “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” Are you ready to change your mind?
