What Are You Waiting For?

Updated: Feb 4, 2024

We are all waiting for something to happen. We are all waiting for peace. We are waiting to become healthy and wealthy. We are waiting for our lives to find some kind of balance. We are all waiting for our lives to become as we wanted them to be, or at least how others told us how they should be. We are all waiting for some kind of success to define us. We are waiting for a ‘perfect' relationship: To be loved. We are skirting round the surface of our lives. We are waiting for someone, or something, to bring us peace, joy, serenity, abundance, purpose, and love. We are waiting for validation from outside of ourselves. Why? Because we are stuck in our fearful thinking minds: They are not producing our thoughts.

We are trying to compete with, and beat, other people to become someone that none of us even want to be. We don’t love or even like ourselves. We live in fear, ego, and conflict. We blame everyone else. We are fake, inauthentic. Yet we are terrified of letting go of our fake selves, as we don't know who we are or how to navigate the world. We feel like an alien, stranded on this Earth, without a map.

Yet, a part of us wants to glimpse Truth: We want to know how to go into our inner selves and find everything that we ever wanted. We want to learn how to go deeper, how to reach our inner true Self: Who we really are. There is no limit to the psychological, intellectual, mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing that is available to us if we do. If we only knew how to do it…

Nothing I refer to in this article refers to established religion, apart from when I use quotes from some of the world’s greatest ever philosophers, who happen to be quoted in texts such as the Bible. Jesus, a human being who never chose to be his ego, and was therefore a genius philosopher, who was a historical figure (of that there is no doubt) was quoted in Luke 17:21 "For, behold, the kingdom of God is within you" in response to the Pharisees asking when the Kingdom of God will come. We all have the infinite possibility of Jesus. He was the most influential human being of the last two millenia. He is likely to hold that record for a while, unless we change who we are choosing to be. We simply do not choose to receive that possibility, out of fear. Jesus spoke Truth, that was his gift to us. He was love, compassion, and saw the divine in all of us. That was how he healed and created miracles.

Everything you ever wanted is already here, and it’s inside you. In Matthew 6:32-34 it states “For the Gentiles strive after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God… and all these things will be added unto you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.” What Jesus was saying is that the key to all that you seek is to look inside you, remain present at all times, and simply ask whenever you need to make any decision “What would love do?” You may access this inner space by quietening your mind. Psalm 46:10 states “Be still, and know that I am God.” The "I" is you. You just need to still your mind: The 'monkey mind' referred to by the Buddhists; full of pointless fearful constant chatter. This is achieved in 'flow state'. This is available to us during silent meditation or when we are creating, for example through sport, music, journaling or writing. When you write from this place it is a process of discovering and something new comes from inside you: A place of Truth. Writing from our deepest Self takes us from chaos, drama, fear and pain to peace and Truth. When you write after meditation you access an unconscious part of your mind that is one with the Universe and is pure Truth. This kind of writing brings us to, and keeps us in, the present moment. Writing allows us to keep separation between our ego and our emerging real Self.

This involves daily ego deflation. This occurs during open, vulnerable, authentic connection with others who are the same. The ego is like the ‘Terminator’ – just when you think he is destroyed he melts back into shape, and starts chasing you again, every morning. It’s your daily choice as to who you are being: Your ego (the little you who thinks he is a big shot) or your highest Self (who is a limitless being, yet full of humility). The transformative healing journey stops the ego from being in competition with everyone else. You are not in competition, as you are unique. Who you are is your value. Letting go of who you think you are, your ego (your false self) is the beginning of the process of becoming. It’s finding a safe space inside that will bring you wisdom and peace. Fear (the language of your ego) and Faith (in your true Self) cannot co-exist. Counter self-hatred with self-compassion, even when those who are fast asleep do not even understand the word: They are too full of their own shame. Rather than resentment and blame, choose forgiveness and gratitude. It is the path of the heart, and it is the shortest route from the mind to your soul. As Ram Dass, the Harvard Psychiatrist turned spiritual guru, said "The only work we have to do is on our Selves."

Creativity and writing accesses or channels the unconscious (the psychiatrist, and father of analytical psychotherapy, Carl Jung said that 90 percent of our thoughts are unconscious). This is intuition. When you are in that state you allow Truth to flow through you. You are not conscious of the unconscious but words appears on the page: It’s evidence that the higher Self is real. This is how you stay fresh: By discovering deeper and deeper Truths. People want to be taught how to go inside and reach their inner true Self. Writing produces a physical record of the unconscious. We see things that we didn’t know before. If it’s too analytical and structured it is doomed.

This is the paradox of the mind: We have a conscious mind, which is asleep and generates negative fearful thoughts (which are not really thoughts at all) from our reptilian survival brain that are not our own via the ego, and the unconscious mind, which is how we access creativity, original thought, Universal intelligence, and which generates thoughts via our higher Self through our hearts, the resting place of our souls.

Keep planting seeds: Though the conscious mind is asleep; the subconscious mind is awake! You just need to access it

Vincent Van Gogh wrote "I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart." Not only was Van Gogh a stunning artist, he was also a human being of intense spiritual energy, like Michaelangelo. Van Gogh was a creative genius who lived fully for his painting and in service of others. It was his creativity which brought original authentic richness to all those around him. If we live from a place of imitation love, our hearts are impoverished and empty: We lack spiritual nourishment and the power to give to others or to serve them. Imitation love thrives in the shadows and is transactional. Fortunately there are creative people like Van Gogh who have the power to enrich life not only through their art, but also through their passion for the adventure of living. They, and others like them, convince us that we owe it to life to heal, find real love, Truth and real beauty, which live forever in the heart. Faith is simply 'spiritualised creativity.'

Creating art of any form has a powerful effect on your subconscious mind: It is a portal to extending your dreams from the realm of miracles into the physical world. Why else could art make you spellbound?

Discovery is a joy. It’s a energising transformative journey; a calling; rather than being driven or forced to tread a path asleep that is full of pain. Discovery of who you truly are is the path to Enlightenment.

It’s about going deeper and deeper inside your Self. Rest in awareness. Recovery is the bridge. Other healing disciplines, which are essentially metaphors for transformation, such as philosophy and positive psychology help you to dig deeper and build higher. No one path is right or wrong. They all look the same. But be aware of blind spots in all the disciplines: They are all tools, which work only on what they are designed for. It is the responsibility of your higher power to individualise your healing: This is an intimate journey with your Self. The insight is in the healing. Recovery can become very basic and repetitive - repeating aphorisms, half asleep. Certain psychological approaches, such as psychodynamic therapy, replicate your inner critic. There is nothing wrong with this; but if you are aware of this you will know that you will need something else to soothe the pain that the critic instills in you. When you glimpse the Truth, it heals you.

Ask what is my pain teaching me? What would love do? Allow something else to come forward. The world is waiting for this divine inspiration. And it’s inside you, right now. Let me know if you need a guide. I know the path. I am here to serve you. Meister Eckhart, the German philosopher said “God is at home, it's we who have gone out for a walk… The outward work will never be puny if the inward work is great…What a man takes in by contemplation, that he pours out in love.”

Who are you choosing to be? Ego (wounmded inner child) or highest Self? It's your daily choice

As Immanuel Kant, perhaps the greatest philosopher of the modern Western world said “To be is to do.” So, who will you choose to be today? What are you waiting for?
