The Three Greatest Gifts

Updated: Feb 12

The Biblical Magi, also known as the 'Three Wise Men', or the 'Three Kings', were distinguished individuals in the Gospel of Matthew and Christian tradition. They are said to have visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But what are the three greatest gifts that you can give anyone at any time of the year, not just at Christmas? Gifts that are so healing and life-changing that they are utterly priceless. Gifts that can take you from despair, pain, fear, and darkness to joy, bliss, love, personal power, abundance, limitless possibility, and peace. Those three gifts are:

  1. Unconditional love

  2. Compassion

  3. To salute the divine in another

What are the three greatest gifts that you can give?

For me unconditional love is when one cares only for the happiness of another, and that alchemical transformative process does not require anything in return. This has also been called real love. When we feel real love we don't need anything else: When we don't feel real love nothing else is enough. I truly believe that this underlies most of our pain as human beings. Love is the only real medicine. Love is the greatest miracle cure. Love is the foundation of joy, peace and bliss. You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving. 'Romantic' love is an illusion, a mere imitation: An ephemeral dopamine hit. Real love is an ethereal other-worldy energy that transmutes any pain into bliss. Real love is when someone gives you a piece of your soul, that you never knew was missing. Imitation love and the ego create transactional connections which are based on "What can I get from this?" Real love is not transactional. The purpose of all relationships is a process of becoming who you are and to allow the other to grow into who they are.

Compassion means to see another human being without judgement. Compassion is the chief law of human existence. Compassion is the radicalism of our time. Compassion is the basis for morality. We are all like the rest of us. Any civilisation that does not have compassion as the basis for morality is actually not civilised at all.

3. To salute the divine in another

This is the origin of the word 'Namaste'. It means to honour the place within another where the entire Universe resides. In other words "I honour the place within you, where, when you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us." It is a place of light and Truth. Rumi wrote "If everything around seems dark, look again, you may be the light."

How do you combine these three greatest gifts?

In essence these three gifts are part of a whole: Three facets of one essential diamond. They are not luxuries, they are necessities. Without them humanity cannot survive.

These three gifts may be combined as follows: "If you can care for the joy of another human being, without any condition or judgement, by seeing them as the highest possible version of themselves, until they see it for themselves, and by listening to their authentic heart, then they may become who they were born to be, but who the world forgot."

Lord Ganesha, the God of wisdom and success from the Hindu Pantheon and Buddhism, is known as 'The Remover of Obstacles' and 'The Lord of Beginnings.' He has large elephant ears, which symbolise the ability to keenly listen to all prayers.
