Jim Carrey and You

Updated: Jan 25

I was working as a surgeon and I was more lost than ever before: I had achieved all of my 'dreams' and I was empty, dead, miserable. Jim Carrey was busy filming 'Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond' where he was portraying one of his idols - Andy Kaufman. He famously fell into a deep depression after filming, wondering who and what Jim Carrey was/is. I was falling into a depression of my own for much the same reasons. It was an existential crisis that was the beginning of a spiritual awakening...

Here are some nuggets of wisdom Jim Carrey learned during those years along with some of my own and some of my other favourites...

“We are not the avatars we create. We are the light that shines through.” Jim Carrey created one of the funniest, most loveable avatars there ever was, yet it still made him depressed. It was only when he realised he was the spirit that brought everything alive that he became free. Some people call it God, others call it consciousness. Jim Carrey called it “the light that shines through” and I love that.

“I really believe in the philosophy that you create your own Universe. I’m just trying to create a good one for myself.” - Jim Carrey

“You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love” This one stuck with me ever since I heard it. Over the years, it’s inspired me to become a Transformative Life Coach (TLC) and a writer. When one dream becomes real, they all can.

“This is the real secret of life - to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realise it is play” - Alan Watts

“Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Risk being seen in all of your glory.” I love this - take off your mask and realise that you are even more lovable. For forty years, I learned to fit in so I would be accepted. However, this ended with me living with chronic anxiety because I was people-pleasing the whole time. So, as scary as being authentic is, it’s also liberating. It's the only way to be.

“If you aren’t in the moment, you are either looking forward to uncertainty or back to pain and regret.” Trauma lives in the past. Uncertainty belongs to the future. Both can bring us out of the present moment. One has already happened and the other is yet to come. The only one we can control is the one happening right now. So, whenever the past creeps up and taps me on the shoulder or the future tugs at my ankles anticipatory, I pause, take a deep breath, and remember Jim’s kind words. “As far as I can tell, it’s just about letting the Universe know what you want and then working toward it while letting go of how it comes to pass.”

Fear is going to be a player in your life, but you get to decide how much. You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts, worrying about your pathway to the future, but all there will ever be is what’s happening here, and the decisions we make in this moment, which are based on either love or fear.” So, choose love. It’s more joyful and more powerful.

“You are ready and able to do beautiful things in this world... I wake up some mornings and sit and have my coffee and look out at my garden, and I go, ‘Remember how good this is. Because you can lose it.” - Jim Carrey. Thich Nhat Hanh put it another way: “Waking up this morning, I smile. Twenty-four brand new hours are before me. I vow to live fully in each moment and to look at all beings with eyes of compassion.” Today is another opportunity for us to do just that.

“My soul is not contained within the limits of my body; my body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul.” He also said “I used to be a guy who was experiencing the Universe, but now I feel like the Universe experiencing a guy” And: “I wondered, who is it that’s aware that I’m thinking? And suddenly I was thrown into this amazing feeling of freedom. I was no longer a fragment of the Universe, I was the Universe.”

“Consider the flowers; they don’t try to look right. They just open their petals and turn to the light.” When that light is within, the heart remains open and it radiates through naturally.

“The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is.” So, don’t underestimate your value. You are far more beautiful than you give yourself credit for.

“Maybe other people will try to limit me but I don’t limit myself.” - Jim Carrey

“Energy is what I believe all of us are. We’re just conscious awareness dancing for itself for no other reason but to stay amused.”

“What I am really saying is that you don’t need to do anything, because if you see yourself in the correct way, you are all as much extraordinary phenomenon of Nature as trees, clouds, the patterns in running water, the flickering of fire, the arrangement of the stars, and the form of a galaxy. You are all just like that, and there is nothing wrong with you at all.” - Alan Watts

“Life doesn’t happen to you. It happens for you” In truth, life is inherently neutral except for the meaning we give it. The way to make it meaningful is to direct it with all of your heart.

“You don’t have to be the victim of your environment. You can also be the architect of it” - James Clear

“Life opens up opportunities to you, and you either take them or you stay afraid of taking them.” Life rewards courage by giving us more opportunities. The hardest thing is to take the first step.

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and starting on the first one.” - Mark Twain

“I would challenge anybody in their darkest moment to write what they’re grateful for.”

That’s because “Gratitude is the place where all dreams come true.” - Jim Carrey

Writing is one of the ways that brings our thoughts to life. It makes the invisible visible and suddenly great forces start to make those words real. That’s how the light begins to enter the dark and alchemise it into wisdom. As a full-time Deep Coach and writer, I’m astutely aware of the power of words. Perhaps Bruce Lee said it best: “Words are energy and they cast spells, that’s why it’s called spelling. Change the way you speak about yourself, and you can change your life.”

Namaste.

Sending you love, light, and blessings brothers.
