Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, father of analytical psychology, philospher, and spiritual Master, is celebrated for his groundbreaking work in psychology, a field where he seemingly found inspiration by juggling flaming torches within his own psyche, while reciting Shakespearean (another spiritual Master) sonnets. What a legend he was! Like William Shakespeare, the importance to 'Know thyself', was central to his works.
During a period that others have described as psychosis that lasted over a decade, he wrote 'The Red Book', which was the basis for all of his life's works: His psychosis hardly seems to be a limiting factor, but rather the nuclear reactor for his creativity: Something that anyone experiencing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or 'mental illness' (which seems to be the norm these days on order to cope with a chaotic and drama-fuelled world) will potentially identify with. Carl Jung had a deep knowledge of the soul. He thought that each of us is a part of a divine indescribable whole that he called the soul, or God: God reflects our subconscious (our soul).
His ideas have left an indelible mark on the field of psychology and beyond, reshaping how we understand the human mind and its complexities. Carl Jung knew God: In other words he understood that the soul, found within each of us, is our divinity and our superpower. The soul, by diving into our subconscious and integrating it into our psyche, is how we awaken our Higher Self, become whole and authentic, and find our Real Personal Power.
Jung’s exploration of the unconscious, archetypes, and the collective unconscious has not only influenced psychology but also mainstream thinking.
Are you also in pursuit of life’s profound meaning, much like countless others have been throughout history?
In this article, I’ll explore how Jung’s wisdom can guide you on a path of Self-discovery and personal growth, ultimately revealing the elusive meaning of life and our God-given purpose, especially through writing.

Carl Jung and writing - 'The Red Book'
The quest for meaning
In a world filled with the constant whirlwind of activity, where the demands of daily life often prompt us to ponder the very essence of our existence, the pursuit of meaning is a timeless undertaking.
This enduring quest has spurred thinkers, philosophers, and those yearning for understanding to delve into the profound intricacies of human existence.
Among the illustrious minds who have ventured into these depths, Carl Jung emerges as a towering figure, bestowing upon us profound insights that illuminate the intricate maze of the human psyche.
Carl Jung has as much to say about meaning as does Viktor Frankl, the psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor.
Jung’s unique perspective
Carl Jung was no ordinary psychologist; he was a visionary and a metaphysical philosopher. His ideas transcended the boundaries of conventional psychology, delving into the realm of spirituality and the collective unconscious.
But how did Jung’s journey lead him to uncover the meaning of life in a way that many others missed?
A deep dive into the psyche
Jung’s exploration began with a fundamental realisation: Understanding one's Self is the key to understanding the world; is the basis of creativity; and is the basis for awakening our divinity.
He believed that our minds were not merely the products of our conscious thoughts but were also influenced by a vast reservoir of collective 'Universal' knowledge he termed the 'collective unconscious.'
Fascinatingly, Jung found that within this collective unconscious lay a treasure trove of metaphors, symbols and archetypes (including God) that are shared by all of humanity.
These archetypes, such as the Hero, the Wise Old Man (God), and the Shadow, form the basis of our myths, dreams, and stories. They hold the keys to unlocking the mysteries of our existence.
The power of Self-awareness
So, how does this knowledge relate to the meaning of life? Well, Jung believed that by delving deep into our own psyches, by exploring our unconscious thoughts, we can unravel the profound truths about our existence.
It’s a bit like a journey into the depths of a vast ocean. The surface may be tumultuous and chaotic, but as you dive deeper, you begin to discover the hidden treasures beneath.
In this case, the treasures are the insights into your own soul and the meaning that resides within.
Writing as a tool for Self-discovery
Now, here’s where it gets really interesting. Jung realised that one of the most effective tools for plumbing the depths of the psyche was writing.
He advocated for the practice of what he called 'Active imagination,' where one engages in a form of written self-dialogue.
It’s a bit like having a conversation with your own inner sage, gaining insights and guidance that are uniquely tailored to your life’s path.
The art of active imagination
Active imagination isn’t just about scribbling down your thoughts; it’s about engaging in a profound dialogue with your inner world.
Jung encouraged individuals to let their imaginations run wild, to explore the landscapes of their dreams, and to engage with the characters that inhabit their inner realms.
It’s akin to crafting a novel where you are both the author and the protagonist, navigating the twists and turns of your own psyche.
Through this process, you begin to understand the deeper layers of your being and, in turn, the deeper layers of life’s meaning.
The journey begins
So, how can you embark on this transformative journey inspired by Carl Jung’s wisdom? Here’s your roadmap to discovering the meaning of life, just as he did.
Step 1: Self-reflection
The first step is to turn your gaze inward. Set aside time for introspection, away from the noise and distractions of the world.
Find a quiet space, grab your journal, and start reflecting on your thoughts and emotions.
Pro Tip: Guided Meditation
Try a guided meditation that leads you on a journey into your own psyche. Websites like Calm and Headspace offer excellent resources. I have given links to my favourite guided meditations here.
Step 2: Embrace your shadow
Jung emphasised the importance of confronting our inner shadows - the aspects of ourselves that we often repress or deny.
By acknowledging and integrating these shadows, we can achieve a deeper understanding of our true Selves.
Pro Tip: Shadow Work Resources
Explore shadow work exercises and resources on websites like Psychology Today and The School of Life.
Step 3: Engage in active imagination
Now comes the writing part. Set aside regular time for active imagination sessions.
Write down your inner dialogues and let your creativity flow.
Pro Tip: Journaling Tools
For digital journaling, consider platforms like Medium.
Step 4: Seek guidance
Just as Jung had his mentors and guides, seek out resources that can help you on your journey.
Whether it’s books, online courses, or therapy, finding the right guidance can be a game-changer.
Pro Tip: Online Courses
The revelation
As you delve deeper into your own psyche through these practices, you’ll begin to notice a transformation.
Insights will emerge, patterns will become clear, and the meaning of life will reveal itself to you in ways you never imagined.
Carl Jung’s journey was not just about his own self-discovery; it was about unlocking the potential for Self-discovery within all of us.
He believed that by understanding ourselves, we could find our unique purpose in the grand tapestry of existence.
Unlocking the true meaning of life
In a world filled with distractions and noise, the quest for meaning can feel like an elusive chase.
But, as Carl Jung discovered, the answers lie within us. Through self-reflection, dream exploration, shadow work, and active imagination, we can embark on a transformative journey that leads us to the true meaning of life.
So, are you ready to take the first step? Grab your journal, confront your shadow, and let the words flow.
The meaning you seek may be just a pen stroke away.
Wrapping it up: Finding meaning in Jung’s wisdom
Jung, the godfather of psychology, taught us that the meaning of life isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal; it’s more like a DIY project. It’s about exploring the depths of your own psyche, confronting your inner demons, and putting pen to paper to make sense of it all.
In a world where we’re bombarded with noise and distractions, Jung’s teachings remind us to hit pause and turn inward.
By reflecting on our thoughts, and diving into the shadows of our minds, we unlock layers of insight that guide us on our personal journeys.
But here’s the kicker - there’s no final answer. It’s not a sprint; it’s a marathon.
Sometimes, you’ll feel like you’ve cracked the code of life, and other times, you’ll be scratching your head. That’s all part of the ride.
Jung’s legacy is all about self-awareness and the power of writing. So, keep those journals handy and keep that inner dialogue alive through writing.
Remember, the meaning of life isn’t a destination; it’s a journey filled with ups, downs, and countless aha moments.
So, keep on writing, keep on exploring, and keep on discovering the profound truths that reside within you. You are your own saviour...
I see you, I hear you, I see the divine in you.
Speak in such a way that others love to listen to you: Listen in such a way that others love to speak to you.
Namaste.
